Advent Candles hymn 2017

We gather now round the Advent Ring;
each candle tall, what message will it bring?
Come and light a flame, to see what it might say.
Cherish its light as you walk the way.

Lift up your head, you who’ve suffered long;
for Christ will come, the weak will be made strong.
As we light a flame, the candle seems to say:
Have no more fear, HOPE is on the way.

Lift up your eyes, meet your neighbour’s smile;
for Christ will come, to heal and reconcile.
As we light a flame, the candle seems to say:
Turn now from strife, PEACE is on the way.

Lift up your heart, heavy still with sin;
for Christ will come, to change you from within.
As we light a flame, the candle seems to say:
Hatred be gone, LOVE is on the way.

Lift up your voice, unrestrained in praise;
for Christ will come, to brighten all your days.
As we light a flame, the candle seems to say:
Sorrow will end, JOY is on the way.

Tune: Soleado (“When a child is born”).
To be used progressively: Verses 1 and 2 on Advent Sunday, then adding a further verse each Sunday during Advent.

On Christmas Day and the Sunday after Christmas, this two-verse version may be used:

We gather now round the Advent Ring;
each candle tall, what message will it bring?
Come and light a flame, to see what it might say.
Cherish its light as you walk the way.

Immanuel, God with us, we sing;
and Hope, and Peace, and Love, and Joy he’ll bring.
As we gather here, the candles burn to say:
Jesus is born! Born on Christmas Day!  (or “Jesus is born! Christ is here to stay!”)

On Epiphany Sunday, this two-verse version may be used:

Immanuel, God with us, we sing;
and Hope, and Peace, and Love, and Joy he’ll bring.
As we gather here, the candles burn to say:
Jesus is born! Christ is here to stay!

The candles shine, hailing Christ the King;
“Light of the world!” – the message that they bring.
In the sky above, a star to show the way;
give him your heart now and every day.
