Hymns

Friends and partners in the Gospel

Friends and partners in the Gospel
we have come expectantly:
seeking knowledge and discernment,
that our lives may fruitful be.
Thus we’ll join in proclamation,
praising Christ in deed and word:
of one mind and of one purpose
in the service of our Lord.

If in Christ we find our courage,
if we’re comforted in love,
if God’s Spirit spurs our sharing,
let us now Christ’s pattern prove.
Rights renouncing, self abasing,
his obedience our accord:
of one mind and of one purpose
in the service of our Lord.

For the knowledge of Christ Jesus
makes a loss of every gain;
and he surely will transform us
as his glory is made plain.
Set aside each vain achievement,
pressing on our goal toward:
of one mind and of one purpose
in the service of our Lord.

Free and endless our rejoicing,
for the Lord our God is near.
Let our prayer and glad thanksgiving
overcome in us all fear.
May God’s peace sustain and guard us
as our unity’s restored:
of one mind and of one purpose
in the service of our Lord.

Written initially for a local ecumenical study series on the Letter to the Philippians: each of the hymn’s four verses is based upon a chapter of that Letter.

Suggested tunes: Nettleton, What A Friend
