Hymn of Thanksgiving for a child’s birth

A child within a basket once
lay hidden near the river:
and who could know the child would grow
a nation to deliver?

Wrapped in a family’s love,
this child is watched by God above:
May all *his days be blessed
with courage, faith, and freedom.

The baby, by God’s providence
was found by palace daughter:
to paupers born, by princess drawn
from perils of the water.

Wrapped in a family’s love…

Each child is named and known and loved
before *his first breath’s taken.
*His future’s known to God alone:
*he’ll never be forsaken.

Wrapped in a family’s love…

And so, with thanks for all *he’ll be
and all *he is already,
this child we bring, and praises sing
to God whose gaze is steady.

Wrapped in a family’s love…

* pronouns may be replaced with she/she’ll/her as appropriate.

Written for a service to give thanks for the birth of a new godson.

Tune: ‘Greensleeves’
